What does GWR do?
GWR provides two core services to horse
owners, firstly the training given to the horse as its strengths, weaknesses and
traits are identified, with this in mind an ideal race can be selected that best
favours the horse. Secondly the care and accommodation provided to horses, who
each have their own stalls and must be cared for by staff 24 hours a
day.
Target Market
The businesses target market is quite
broad, it includes any person, of any gender, age, race etc. as long as they
have disposable income. Shares in horses are expensive, additionally there are
still ongoing trainer’s fees and the fact that 80% of horses do not return a
profit to their owner for the industry as a whole. With this in mind the target
market intends to not simply sell the horse as an investment, but the experience
of owning a horse and one that is trained by Gai. The
entertainment of ownership is emphasised. At almost all race meetings GWR has a
table in the member’s area of the course for their owners, they are also
encouraged to bring their friends. Every Sunday Gai also holds a small get
together of her owners at the Tulloch Lodge stable, where food is served,
upcoming races are discussed and horses are paraded.
Stakeholders
Internally the main stakeholder is Gai
along with her owners and her employees. Externally punters are affected by
which races Gai’s horses are in, Horse breeders are affected by which of her
horses perform well, when they go to stud and to which breeding firm they go to
if any. Companies that provide horse float services and transport are affected
by when and where her horses race and feed suppliers are effected by the
quantity of horses in the stable as this determines how much feed is ordered.
Jockeys are affected by who is chosen to ride horses in race meetings, stewards
and racing regulators are affected by the actions of Gai and her staff and
finally the ground staff at Randwick are affected by the level of wear caused on
the tracked by her horses.
Competition
Competition to trainers within the Racing
Industry is substantial; there are hundreds of registered trainers in NSW,
however due to the size of GWR there are only a few main competitors, such as
Peter Snowden , Lee Freedman and most notably Chris Waller racing.
These stables represent the most significant local competition, international
competition is not large outside of major races.

Technology
GWR recognises that due to the high levels of both major and minor competition
technology is one way to retain a competitve advantage. In recent years GWR has brought in some new
technologies such as the HPGM or the ‘High Performance Galloping Machine’ a
highly effective horse treadmill. There is also the Equine swimming pool and the
cold water ice spa which is used to help both treat and prevent injuries.
Additionally the business uses specially made cameras that are attached to
Jockey’s helmets that allow the filming of a horses work. The HPGM and pool are
used as they allow a horse to do light or heavy exercise without needing to
actually leave the stable area and go out onto the track, additionally the
likely hood of an injury is lessened from its already miniscule chance. The
footage taken through the camera is edited and combined with footage of Gai, her
Racing Manager’s and Jockey’s comments on the horse’s performance clips of these
are put on the GWR website weekly as ‘Gai TV’, see 'Promotion' for an episode of Gai TV
Impact on Business
Technology has very much effected the space
available at GWR, many horse stalls had to be removed and set up elsewhere to
accommodate the space of the pools and cold water ice spa and the HPGM.
Additionally while the machines were also expensive the treadmills were so large
and heavy they had to be lifted into the business by a mobile crane.
Note floor plan on the back page. Workers have been effected in a number
of ways, firstly jockeys have slightly less work to do as horses can do their
work in the Equine pool or on the treadmill, however this has also meant that
stable hands have more work to do as they must supervise the horse at all times.
As a matter of efficiency however it is generally more effective as multiple
horses can be worked without going onto the track for work, this reduces traffic
for all trainer’s horses and reduces damage to the track, providing a minor
benefit to grounds staff. As a bonus video editing staff have not been necessary to recruit
as the work is outsourced to Tom Waterhouse.com, in exchange for advertisement on the
videos and Gai's site.
