Location
Gai Waterhouse Racing operates
at Randwick Racecourse, this makes it easy to get to race courses in the city area for
trials and proper races, however it often requires a large amount of travel time
to provincial and country tracks. Suppliers of feed and horse transport services
are also present close by. The location of the business in relation to
suppliers and race courses is generally good. The business requires no transport
if races are at Randwick and on a regular basis the furthest race course is
Newcastle, a 3 hour drive. Feed suppliers operate relatively close by, roughly a
2 hour drive away, they make monthly deliveries by truck. Horse transport
companies are large in quantity and because of the number of trainers operating
at Randwick they are positioned directly nearby, allowing easy access to horse
transport services. It is worth noting that competitors John O'Shea and Graheme Begg also
operate at randwick
Owner and Operational History
Gai Waterhouse is the owner and operator of the private business, she got granted
her trainer’s license in January 1992, and her first winner was Gifted Poet in
March, 1992 at Hawkesbury. She had been an apprentice of her father legendary
trainer T.J Smith, but she had difficulty obtaining a license due to her
husband’s ban from the industry. From her tough beginnings she has come to equal
her father’s record of 156 metropolitan winners in a season. Since then she has
become arguably the finest trainer in Australia, winning a well over a hundred
Group 1 races and has, multiple times, won every single major Australian prize
except the Melbourne Cup, which still eludes her. Gai Waterhouse was inducted
into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame on the 26th of November 2007. She
currently has over 120 horses in training. The influence her father made on her is clearly evident
in that Gai's site has an entire page dedicated to him.

The business provides a service, as it trains and cares for horses within the
stable. As this is a service, it is part of the tertiary sector. The business is medium as it has close to seventy employees.
Mission Statment
Gai Waterhouse racing does not have a direct mission statement; however it states a
number of goals. Firstly Gai simple wishes to continue to maximise the number of
winning horses she has and prize money earned, while also keeping and bringing
in new owners and investors. For more see the 'Our Goals' section
